Planning a Trip to Tulum? Let's Talk about it!
Tulum has been growing a lot over the past few years. There are even talks about an airport being built in Tulum because the influx over tourist over the past couple years.
If you're planning to visit Tulum be prepared for the long drive from the airport in Cancun. Its about an 2 hour and 30 minute car ride. After you exit the airport its tradition to grab a beer for the taxi ride. If it's a good driver he might even have some cold ones waiting for you.
So where should you stay?
Let's start with in town. You can find some cheap airbnbs/hostels here. I stayed in one for $20 a night however, it was very far and a little bit sketchy since I was alone. If you're staying with friends and have a car then its a great budget friendly choice. If you find yourself solo in Tulum (which is totally do-able) you might want to stay closer to the beach.
Next place to stay, I call it the middle part. Its the road in-between the town and beach. Here you can find some decently priced hotels like Aloft Hotel which I stayed in for about $100 a night. It was clean and even had a roof top pool/bar area. Prices may vary depending on the season. If you decide to stay in this area taxi's to the beach will cost you about $15-$20 one way but you can usually bargain with them. There are plenty of bike rentals and a walkable path to the beach but in the heat it can be unbearable.
Lastly we have the hotels on the beach. These hotels can range anywhere from $100-$2,000 a night. Staying on the beach can get really expensive but its also worth it. I really enjoyed staying at BT Live Tulum, if you end up staying there let Javier know I sent ya. They're really great people running the hotel! I would say stay on the beach at least 2-3 nights just to really enjoy the water and having everything so close.
Tulum is the perfect quick get-a-way only an hour flight from Miami. The vibes, food, and beach make this one of my favorite destinations. Mexico holds a special place in my heart and I love visiting. If you were wanting to check out another place in Mexico without breaking the bank try looking into Playa Del Carmen.
