The Best and Worst Hostel Jobs

Working in hostels has been one of the coolest experiences I've done.

With that being said, it's not always a glamous job. There are quite a few task I've absolutely hated and even a hostel I left a week after working there. From dirty jobs, being overworked, and treated shitty there is a negative side to this lifestyle. Then again, being able to live in a new country and meet some of the coolest people that might even become your closest friends makes it all worth it.

Over the past few months I've worked all sorts of jobs from social media to making beds. I decided to make a list of my favorite and least favorite jobs to give people an idea in case they might want to try working at a hostel.

FAVORITES:

Social Media/Content Creator -

The possibilities are endless when it comes to running a hostels social media. Whether it's instagram, Facebook, or tik tok. The main one is always instagram though. You get full creative control when you run the accounts. I love creating graphics and taking pictures of the guest/hostel activities. It's also fun to post stories and reels about things to do around the city you're staying in. The hostel in Brazil kept sending me list of parties to attend to get carnival content. Not a bad job huh? This will give you A

an opportunity to explore and call it "working".

Here are a few fun jobs I found on Worldpackers, don't forget to use my discount code "tfutchh" to save you some $$$

Bartender-

Although I haven't done bartending at a hostel yet many of my friends have and it's always a simple and fun job. Usually hostels have limited bars so you won't be making crazy cocktails just the simple drinks. Most people end up ordering beer anyways. Being a bartender gives you the opportunity to socialize with guest and meet tons of people. Everyone is always in a happy mood at the bar.

Here's a list of some bartending jobs

Bartend in Peru

Bartend in Nicaragua

Event Coordinator/Party Promoter/Bar Crawl Host

This is one of my new favorites I think. I just started this position for the first time and it's absolutely me. A party promoter will usually speak with guest and let them know about events going on in the hostel or bar crawls outside of it. It's your job to be social and invite people. Pretty awesome gig if I say so myself. Event coordinator is similar except you are in charge of the events. The hostel I'm working at currently has events every night. They range from trivia, beer pong tournaments to beach cleans ups. The hostel even is giving me leadway to design my own nights. I'm hoping for a pajama party.

Leading the pub crawls is also one of my absolute favorites. It's so much fun getting everyone together and showing them a good night. People have had some of the best nights of their nights because of me and that's fucking awesome. Plus you get to party. WIN-WIN!

Here are some cool party jobs

LEAST FAVORITE:

*disclaimer these jobs aren't really that bad but if I had to pick they wouldn't be in my top 3 choices, some people prefer these it's just a personal opinion*

Reception-

Ok this job isn't that bad. I actually debated putting it as one of my favorites since you get to talk to literally everyone who comes into the hostel. I put it as my least favorite because the hours can sometimes be long and if you work a night reception.. good luck. It's by far the worst job I've done. Staying up all night and letting guest in sucks. Most hostels let you sleep, you'll just have to wake up when guest come in which is at all hours especially at a party hostel. As soon as you close your eyes someone's coming in the door. It's almost better to pull an all nighter. However, the next day is fucked because you're so tired. Dont even get me started if the guest are drunk and loud, telling them to keep it down is a job itself. However I would do it again if I had to. Especially since in Portugal working those hard nights meant I could lead pub crawls.

Here are some reception jobs

Reception in Spain

Reception in Croatia

Reception in Mexico

Reception in Colombia

Cleaning/House Keeping-

I hate cleaning. Especially hostels. They can be so gross sometimes. Making 40+ beds a day just sucks. Doing laundry sucks. Cleaning bathrooms sucks. It's just horrible. However when I did this job it meant I didn't have to work night reception so I would take cleaning over nightshift any day. The positive of this position would be the hours. Usually you work mornings and have the afternoon/night off to do whatever. Sometimes it's nice to get up early and have a productive morning instead of being hungover from being a bar crawl host. To each their own!
