I've wrote about my experiences working in hostels, types of jobs one can do, and answered many questions in a Q&A blog.. So now what comes next? Well you apply! If you haven't downloaded Worldpackers yet here's the link. You don't have to join to apply to hostels though there are many ways one can apply. I've touched base on them in my Q&A blog but to summarize you can email, call, dm, or even show up in person and ask. There are also plenty of third party sites with job listings.
But that's not what this blog is going to be about, this blog is for the next step.
"What do I say when I apply"
My biggest piece of advice is be yourself. Working in a hostel requires a fun type of personality. You don't always have to be so serious. Especially depending on the job your applying to!
Keep it short and sweet. I usually write a solid paragraph. The manager hiring people reads many applications I always try to stand out in some way.
So what do I write?
I like to start with an introduction, telling them my name and age. I then write about my past hostel experiences and how I would be a good fit for the specific position I'm applying for. If you don't have any hostel experiences that's completely fine. You can talk about places you've traveled to or hostels you've stayed in and why you like them/want to work in one. A usually like to mention why I would want to work in that country also whether it's a country I've always wanted to visit or a country I love and want to live in.
After you've wrote your experiences/why you want the job I like to give them a little guarantee.
"Wtf is that Taylor?"
I like to mention that I'm a hard worker and quick learner, if they do decide to hire me they won't be disappointed.. 5/5 times it's worked!
After you send the first paragraph to apply you'll get a message back asking for a follow up interview whether it's in the form of a FaceTime, phone call, or maybe they might ask for your resume depending on the person. At this point it's a good sign you'll be picked. The phone call is usually just to get to talk to you and see your personality.. at the end of the call they might tell you they decided to hire you that happens frequently. Or you might just get a message saying your hired book the flight.
At the end of the day just be yourself and write whatever you feel like. Hostels are some of the most laid back environments ran by some pretty awesome people. That's one of the many reasons it's so fun working in them. If you don't get the job you wanted don't be discouraged. There are plentyyyy of hostels and countries out there for you. Everything happens for a reason so I would take that as a sign it wasn't meant to be and something better will come up.
Best of luck guys!!
