A day as an Event/Social Media Coordinator at a Hostel

Being an event coordinator and social media manager at a hostel is one of the coolest jobs I've done so far. In the past I've worked as a pub crawl host, cleaner, and reception. I've done pretty much every job there is. I've tended to love the more social jobs since that's why I love working in hostels. Being an event coordinator gives you so many opportunities to not only meet people but to be creative.

Where I work there are 5 events a week. Two of those events are set in stone so I can't change them but 2-3 I have room to get creative. The two events we have every week are the infamous Thursday night parties where I dj and Saturday nights when we have a beer pong tournament.

Some events I've done at night are charades, flip cup, card games, rage cage, even painting with a twist. It really depends on however I'm feeling and how many guest we have. It's hard to do some big flip cup tournament with 4 people.. I've tried.

Every Saturday before the following week starts I will plan out the events and make the according graphics with the right days/dates and then I will schedule them with google suite which makes life pretty easy especially on the mornings I want to sleep in.

So what does a normal day look like for me?

Well I start off the morning around 9/9:30 .. I get dressed and brush my teeth. After that I go to the restaurant area and update our chalkboard with the nightly event and make sure the scheduled morning post on instagram went through.

That's pretty much all I have to do for the early morning since my job is mostly in the afternoon/evening. I get breakfast which is usually the tipico Guatemalan breakfast consisting of fried eggs, tortillas, fried beans, and plantains. It's one of my favorites! After breakfast I usually chill and talk to my coworkers.. sometimes if I'm super full I go and take a nap because I hate mornings.

Around 12 or 1pm I start mingling with the guest and talking to them. There are usually new check ins around this time so I try to introduce myself to people. Sometimes I even grab a drink and go for a swim. Occasionally I'll walk around the hostel taking pictures and posting stories of guest. The afternoon time is really just for socializing and letting guest know about our events for the night. I will then grab our staff lunch and annoy my coworkers a little bit more because I love them.

Around 4:30 I start heading the the beach for the sunset. On mondays I do the beach clean ups but on the other days I will walk the beach and promote the hostel event like our famous parties or beer pong tournaments. I really hate going up to people on the beach so I think this is my least favorite part about the job to be honest. When the starts to set I will sit down with friends and watch it, one thing about living so close to the beach.. I will never ever miss a sunset.

After the sunset I walk back to the hostel and shower quickly before dinner. I usually will have some sort of pasta. The events usually always start around 8pm so my work really starts at night time. Sometimes I'll also walk around and tell people during dinner time what we will be doing after so they stick around. When the time comes I will do another round telling people to come join us or sign people up it really depends on the event. During the events I will also be posting on the instagram story for people to see how much fun we have :) !

The bar will stay open until 10-11PM so that's how long I'll work until. After the bar shuts down I help move all the tables back and clean up. My job is officially done for the night unless I go DJ somewhere else like an after party which sometimes starts a midnight. If I'm not DJing anywhere I will sometimes go to another hostel and see friends for a drink or just get to bed early because I'm exhausted.

Overall my job is so much fun and I love hosting events and meeting so many amazing people. If I ever find another hostel with the same position available I will 100% be doing it. My favorite thing I've learned so far from being the event manager is going up to strangers and inviting them to things/having conversations with literally anyone and everyone.
