5 Ways to Save While Traveling

Updated: Feb 9, 2022

Traveling can sometimes be expensive but it doesn't always have to be! Over the years I’ve picked up a few tricks on ways to save some money and I wanted to share them with you guys here. Below are just a few ways I save when it comes to traveling!

1. Skyscanner.com

One of my favorite ways to book flights is through a site called Skyscanner. Skyscanner is a website that scans the internet for the cheapest flights and deals available. I always double check flight prices on expedia and google flights before I book just to make sure I'm getting the best price but skyscanner usually has the best prices. If you happen to have a flight attendant friend try asking for a buddy pass, those can save you money also!

2. Credit Card Points

Some credit card companies have great travel reward programs, it's definitely worth looking into if you're already spending the money to book trips! I originally started out with Bank of America’s travel credit card but then switched over to the American Express Platinum. I started off with gold which didn't have the perks like platinum does but eventually earned my way to platinum and it's the best investment i've made! The annual fees are a bit pricey but you gain access to over 1,300 airport lounges which includes drinks & food, you also receive $200 in credit towards hotels and an airline. You can find a whole list of perks online but for me I save so much time and money hanging out in the lounges.

3. Hostels

Hostels are a great way to save money! They can range anywhere from $8-$100 a night. It really depends where you go. If you’re planning more of a long term travel trip or a solo trip this will really help you out in the long run when it comes to saving money. I also love hostels because it's a great place to meet people and make friends. You can check out my “How to make friends while traveling” blog if you’d like to learn more about that!

4. Cooking at home

Eating out and trying new restaurants is a beautiful part about traveling. However, when you’re doing this every night the cost can add up. One way to save while traveling is cooking at home some nights and packing your breakfast/lunch when you go on tours or day trips. Most hostels you’ll find have communal kitchens where you can keep your food and cook!

5. Split the cost

This can be particularly hard if you’re like me and so used to traveling solo but splitting the cost with a friend can really help you out when it comes to saving money. I like to switch back and forth from traveling solo to traveling with friends. It's the perfect mix for me. Plus, it is nice to travel with someone every now and then and share the experiences.
