20 Lessons I’ve Learned From Traveling to 20 Countries Solo

It all started in 2018 booking a last minute flight to Iceland by myself. Something just clicked the night I booked my flight - I decided I really wanted to go and wasn't going to wait for anyone. The rest of my life has changed since then. From ending up in the hospital in Thailand to facing a burglar in Bali, man it's been a wild ride to say the least. I've met thousands of people and have learned more than I ever thought possible. I'm truly grateful for each and every country and experience. I can't wait to see what the future has in store because I know it's only going to get bigger and better.

Throughout my travels I've learned so much. Whether it's been lessons through self discovery or conversations with strangers. I can't write down everything I've learned but I have complied 20 important lessons that I think are the most important so far. I hope you enjoy!

  1. Talk to strangers - I would consider this one of my biggest pieces of advice. You never know who you could be talking to, what they can teach you, or bring you. It could be a life lesson or even a future job the possibilities are endless. Don't be scared to spark a conversation, just say hello and start there.

  2. People are fucking cool- like really fucking cool. People have done so many things and traveled to all types of places.

  3. Hostels are the shit- Please get over this few that they're dirty and filled with bed bugs. Hostels are some of the best places to meet people and immerse yourself in a cooler way of traveling that's not sitting in your hotel room alone. Don't knock it till you try it.

  4. The confidence you gain is unmatched - by traveling solo I can do literally anything by myself. I wanna go to eat? I'll go alone. I want to do a tour? Ok I'll book it for one. I can talk to anyone and everyone. I'm the most proud of this.

  5. Solo IS better. I'm sorry but I've tried time and time to travel with people and it never works. Especially in more remote countries with people who haven't experienced much, I just can't do it. I prefer to travel on my own time and do my own thing.

  6. It's ok to have a rest day - when you travel you don't always have to be on the go. I don't recommend it actually, it's a quick way to get burned out. If you feel yourself getting tired or moody take a day off and stay in bed. Watch a movie and order delivery food. Don't feel guilty if you're body is telling you to take a break. It'll make the rest of your trip better.

  7. Nothing beats a sunset beer - this one is pretty self explanatory. Never miss a sunset we only have so many on this earth. Also always try the local beer .. for the culture right ;)

  8. Speak up if you're uncomfortable or don't like something- this goes for any and everything. If you're ever in an uncomfortable situation, leave it.

  9. Life is short, kiss that person- I don't regret anything in life I like to say but there are a few times (one in particular) I should've kissed this guy leaving my hostel. I'll probably never see him again. We were both sad we didn't get a goodbye kiss and I have no idea why I didn't. Ever since then I decided id never make that mistake again.

  10. Participate in hostel events - even if they seem silly just do it. It's fun to meet people and socialize.

  11. Sleep on the plane, go the the party/bar- trust me. Even if it means going straight from the club to the airport fuck it. You can always sleep on the plane but missing the party with your friends? You can't get that back. Last day best day baby!

  12. Always pack a little black dress- you never know when you might be going to a club or date. Dress it up or down with white sneakers. You need it.

  13. Say yes to a date with a local- I know it might never go anywhere but try it. Locals are cute and know the area. They can take you to a more low key bar or restaurant and even introduce you to more local cuisines. Life's short, date everyone.

  14. Learn some of the language- it really goes a long way knowing a few foods in the local language like "thank you" or "how are you" it's a sign of respect and effort. We care.

  15. Take all the pictures and videos- never be scared that you're taking too many pictures. Those are memories. Even if you wake up the next day to a camera roll full of drunk videos, those are the best to look back on. Do it.

  16. Nobody fucking cares- literally nobody cares about you and what you're doing and I mean this in the nicest best way possible. Everyone is more worried about themselves to care about something little you do or post. Live your life dude. Fuck them.

  17. Don't plan too far in advance- this one is subjective. From my personal experience I've met so many people who planned months and advance and were upset because they met some travelers and wanted to join them on certain trips or even to different countries but couldn't. It's ok to plan but leave some wiggle room because you never know who you'll meet.

  18. Eat local - one of the best things to do while traveling is trying new foods. Don't be scared to try something new. An open mind is the best mind.

  19. Take recommendations from other travelers- seriously they have been there or done it so they know best. While I was traveling Guatemala I met people who came from Belize so I went there and stayed at the hostels they recommended. I ended up meeting the coolest people. This is just one of the many examples.

  20. You don't need anyone to travel- this is the best lesson for last. Don't wait to try that new restaurant or visit that country. Just go for it. I promise it'll be the best thing you've ever done. Once you start doing stuff on your own, don't ever stop.

(Dedicated to everyone I've met the past 5 years who have completely changed my life for the better and gave me a purpose. Thank You. )
